Until one night, I packed a postcard that said more than friendship should and a limited-edition vinyl into a gift box and tucked in a note:
“Next time we go to a music festival, remember to hold my hand tight.”
He replied:
“You’re too good to me. I don’t know what to do with all of this.”
The sentence hit the bonfire like a bucket of ice water.
On the phone, I made my smile brighter.

Then his words dropped like an icicle straight into my heart:
“Could you try living your own life first?”
The sentence stopped time cold.
Ten minutes earlier, I had still been rehearsing a surprise for the next music festival. Ten minutes later, even breathing came threaded with tiny shards of pain.
That was when I understood that intensity is sometimes deadlier than detachment.
Our chat had become a deserted graveyard.
The cursor blinked alone in the message box as I typed with shaking hands:
“Let’s end this here.”

There was no spring waiting inside the screen.
Only a wasteland burned bare, and my stubborn longing still scattering in the wind.
He was not coming back.
And still I kept watch beside the burned-out remains, listening for the ring that would never come.
I Loved Him Into a Deserter
By the seventh morning, I was locked out of his world for good.
There was no goodbye. Only a red exclamation mark remained in the chat, like a strip pasted across his window, keeping me outside.
I replayed every pause in “You’re too good to me” until, inside that tender snare, I could hear a fire alarm blaring.
It wasn’t that he didn’t crave warmth.
The fire of my love had grown hot enough to make breathing hurt, and survival instinct sent him running.
When the midnight dreams returned, I was still rehearsing his return—
if he said, “I did feel something then,” should I answer with what was left of my dignity, or with what was left of my love?
Now, whenever a new attraction flickers, I smother my own heartbeat first—like pinching out a match just after it catches, thin blue smoke curling upward as I remind myself:
Love like this will burn every new encounter into wasteland.
No one ever taught me how to love in the right measure, just as no one can teach a wildfire, halfway through its burning, to restrain itself.
I only learned to stand beside the ashes with all the stillness I could gather, guarding the ember still faintly glowing in my chest, not daring to show its light to anyone.
