We Said Goodnight Like There Would Be a Next Time.

Goodbye has no rehearsal, so the last line gets said like any other.

11:43 p.m.

The theater had emptied out, leaving only moonlight in disarray across the pavement.

He stopped on the lowest step. I stood at the edge of the pool of light, barely half an arm’s length away, as if the camera had deliberately pushed me farther from him.

I smoothed his collar, the motion as familiar as straightening my own heartbeat.

His embrace was so light it felt as though he were afraid of breaking something. The wind carried his woody scent toward me, leaving its final trace in my breath.

“Make sure you pull the blanket up tonight. The weather’s been strange lately.”

I nodded and said okay, the corners of my mouth lifting while I wondered whether I should change out the thin autumn quilt when I got home.

When he turned away, the red-light countdown had just reached zero.

I waved as lightly as brushing away dust, still stubbornly believing there would be a message from him the next morning.

The elevator mirror reflected a face that had not yet fallen apart. When my signal came back, I opened his feed.

Nothing.

A moment later, my phone lit up:

“Goodnight. Take care of yourself.”

I sent back the same emoji and locked the screen.

I didn’t know then: that woody scent would linger until three in the morning; that goodnight would become the black period nailed to the end of our story.

Outside the window, fallen leaves kept piling themselves into the shape of autumn. The red light began another countdown.

And I still believed this was only another night that called for an extra layer.

The Alarm Woke. He Didn’t.

9:07 a.m.

When the sixth alarm buzzed me awake, my finger was already resting on our chat.

The sweater reflected in the mirror was the one he had once described as “like wearing autumn.” Now the wool only prickled against my skin.

I adjusted the curve of my mouth at the empty air, as if rehearsing an expression for a message that would never be read.

As the elevator descended, the stainless-steel wall reflected me gripping my phone like a believer cradling a shrine that had stopped working.

That evening, when the knife reached the word Happy on my friend’s birthday cake, I turned toward the shadowed entrance.

In other years, he would have pushed through the door carrying the cold in with him, his fingers red from the cold, still remembering to warm my orange juice between his hands.

Now a waiter was lighting a candle at the next table, like a small simulation of a heart still trying to beat on its own.

By sunrise on the fourth day, our chat history had grown thin enough to see through at a glance.

That morning, the city woke exactly as it always did.

There had been no argument.

No goodbye.

Only the dawn-and-dusk line we had traded every day suddenly snapped.

It was like a bakery I passed all the time quietly taking down its sign one day. The street was still there, but one light I had always gone out of my way to pass was gone.

So it wasn’t a delayed signal. It wasn’t that he had been too busy and forgotten.

The little path between us had been sealed off for good in a night no one noticed.

I clutched my phone and held on to one last assumption:

The next time we see each other, he’ll explain.

Time kept moving.

The seventh alarm rang.

My screen never lit up with his call again.

My Waiting Expired in the Subway

I wrote in my Notes app:

“The old man selling flowers by the subway entrance had given every bunch of roses a paper crown.”

But my fingertip opened the conversation pinned at the top of my screen. The last message was from thirty-one days ago.

That goodnight was like an exhibit already withdrawn from the show, still occupying its old place.

As the train pulled in and the rush of air swept past me, I suddenly crouched down.

Not because I was tired.

Because I had realized my waiting had expired.

“It’s time to stop.”

My body issued the notice before my soul did.

We had once shared the minutes of our insomnia, the similar turns in our nightmares. Those small connections had made me believe love was an underground river that could never run dry.

I hadn’t treated that goodnight as an ending, because I thought a real goodbye should come with bells and a rest.

But our ending was more like a letter soaked through with water. By the time you noticed, the ink had already blurred, and no one was there to read it aloud.

I never regretted letting go of the hug too soon. Back then, we both thought tomorrow was infinite.

Innocence is not a flaw. It only made us believe love was like breathing—that it would naturally continue into the next moment.

The train carried a carriageful of lights away.

I deleted the line about the roses and spoke to the darkened screen:

“It turns out the most complete kind of leaving is the one that makes the word ‘goodbye’ stop working altogether.”

What we had misjudged was never whether the love was real. It was believing that sincerity could make spring stay forever.

Even the most beautiful paper crown could not hold back the end of the blooming season.

This Time, I Had Time to Watch Him Leave

The streetlight stretched his shadow long, like a poem slowly emptying out.

“I’m off.”

He stepped onto the broken white lines of the crosswalk.

I waved, but my feet took root. This time, I was going to watch the goodbye happen.

When I looked back, I caught him turning around too. He had stopped amid the traffic, sending me a smile through the lights, so faint it was almost gone.

Half a second was short.

Half a second was also enough to know his departing figure was still within sight.

A sentence suddenly leapt up inside me:

If this is the last time, I want to know.

We say “see you next time” as if sunrise were guaranteed, forgetting how many final goodbyes arrive without notice.

So now, I stood there like a statue of parting.

I watched the outline of him melt into the night, making sure the goodbye was fully archived.

Would I see him again tomorrow?

It no longer mattered.

What mattered was that this frame from tonight had already developed into eternity inside me.

From then on, whenever a winter night needed warmth, I only had to close my eyes to see him standing amid the endless stream of lights—

the curve of his coat hem lifted by the wind, locking within it the whole rest of a life we never got to put into words.

🌙 Why is it so hard to move on when a relationship ends without a clear goodbye?

Because nothing tells you when waiting is supposed to end. If the last message sounded like any other message, the silence after it can still feel temporary. Tomorrow stays open. An explanation still feels possible. By the time the ending finally looks like an ending, you may already have been living inside it for weeks.
