I used to think a partner was the only antidote to loneliness.

He Was Reading My Script
As the dinner wound down, our friends raised their glasses and laughed, telling us we were made for each other.
But deep inside me, a dried-up well stood hollow, leaking cold wind.
To pretend that love had already sealed the emptiness shut, I retold the story of the rain-soaked tiramisu and lifted my glass as evidence for our relationship:
“He understands me better than anyone. Since being with him, I haven’t felt lonely at all.”
Applause gathered around us. He tightened his hand around mine, his tenderness so careful there was nothing in it to fault.
“She doesn’t have to say much. I can tell what she’s thinking.”
But I knew that everything he understood came from the lines I had copied out for him in advance.
Layer after layer of a carefully rehearsed “we’re fine” was painted over the surface, while the frightened, broken version of me underneath slowly darkened and began to rot.
When I got home, I posted our photo. My feed filled with envy and well-wishes.
My tears soaked through my foundation, smearing it into ragged patches. I forced a smile at the mirror and berated myself:
“He’s already done more than enough. What right do I have to still be unsatisfied?”
I kept repeating that this was the happiness I had waited so long for. That I had already escaped loneliness.

The photograph was real. The embrace was real. Only the loneliness rooted in my bones had not eased by even a fraction.
When I was alone, I only had to swallow all my gloom by myself. With someone beside me, I also had to spend myself performing for the world as though loneliness had already been cured and put to rest.

He Waited Outside the Answer

This time, loneliness did not have to disguise itself as tiredness or illness. And he did not dismiss the fracture or the struggle inside me.
That morning, a hairline opening appeared in the distance between us. A thin piece of daylight rested there quietly.
The loneliness still did not disappear. But the truth I had finally spoken was no longer something I forced back into hiding.
We did not rush to find an answer to loneliness. We simply leaned against each other in silence, letting what had been buried for so long, for the first time, remain where the morning light could reach it.

Because companionship and emotional closeness are not always the same thing.
Someone can be kind, present, and loving—and part of your inner world can still have nowhere to land.
Feeling lonely does not mean the relationship is false, or that you are ungrateful.

Being loved and being seen are not the same miracle.
