The ten postcards got me. All that care, all those tiny memories carried for years, and then realizing you may be the only one still living inside that version of the friendship… that hurts in such a quiet way. 🥹 I’m glad you gave yourself the ritual this time, the candle, the takeout, the rose waiting for morning. Some endings don’t need anyone to be the villain to still break our hearts. 🫶

Per, the way you said “some endings don’t need anyone to be the villain to still break our hearts” really stayed with me. 🥹🤍 I think that was the hardest part of this piece to hold onto—that nothing had to be ruined or betrayed for the distance to become real. The memories were still tender. They just no longer lived in the same place for both of us.

And I’m so glad you noticed the ritual at the end—the candle, the takeout, the rose waiting for morning. I didn’t want it to feel like replacing the friendship with “self-love.” It was more like learning how to stay beside myself for one quiet evening after realizing I had been waiting for someone else to return to an old room with me. Thank you for reading this one so gently, Per. 🫂

Xiaobian, I think that is exactly why the ending touched me so much. You didn’t try to replace what was gone or make it mean less. You simply stopped waiting in that old room and chose to sit beside yourself instead. That feels very tender to me. 🥹🫶

Per, you put this so tenderly. 🥹🤍 “You simply stopped waiting in that old room and chose to sit beside yourself instead” feels almost closer to what I wanted the ending to mean than anything I could have explained around it.

And maybe that’s the part I’m still learning—that sitting beside yourself doesn’t mean the old room disappears, or that you stop wishing someone would come back to it. It only means their return is no longer the condition for you to stay through the evening. I really love the way you held that distinction, Per. 🫂

Xiaobian, yes… exactly that. 🥹 I think we understand this place in much the same way. 🫶

Xiaobian..the image of your ten year postcard gift being carelessly tucked behind a pile of unopened presents perfectly captures the agonizing heartbreak of realizing you are the only one still living inside an old intimacy..🥹🫶🏻

Priyanshu, “the only one still living inside an old intimacy” is exactly the ache I was trying to name. 🥹🤍 What hurt wasn’t that those ten years had meant nothing to her. It was realizing that I was still treating them as a place we both lived in, while for her, they had already become something she could set down gently and keep moving.

That’s why the gift pile mattered so much to me. Nothing cruel happened. She didn’t tear the postcards apart or reject what we had been. They were simply placed somewhere lighter than the weight I had carried them with. Your words brought me back to that moment all over again, dear Priyanshu. 🫂

Xiaobian, I think that's what made this piece so heartbreaking. 🥹 It wasn't about anger or rejection, but about discovering that the same memories had found different places in two people's lives. Thank you for trusting me with such a tender part of your story..🫂🫶🏻

Priyanshu, I really love the way you put that—the same memories finding different places in two people’s lives. 🥹🤍 There’s something gentler in that than saying either of us stopped caring. Maybe some memories remain rooms we still live in, while for someone else, they’ve quietly become places they only visit once in a while.

And thank you for holding this part of the story so tenderly. I think that’s why I’m able to share pieces like this with you without wanting to soften them first. 🫂

Xiaobian, I think that difference is what makes such memories so complex. 🥹 Two people can carry the same chapter and still hold it in different ways. I’m grateful you feel safe sharing these parts of your story with me, and I’m always glad to listen..🫂🫶🏻
