Ten years of postcards, and the tears never came.

The text I had sent three days earlier asking for the day off still lay at the corner of the table, gathering frost, while my index finger had already betrayed me: three drops of citrus perfume behind my ear had given me away before the alarm ever could.

When shampoo foam slipped into my right eye, I was standing there practicing how not to blink at my own reflection.

The microwave numbers danced a waltz. Leftovers turned in slow circles inside, warming themselves into a lonely moon. Every second seemed to say:

I curled into the corner of the sofa. Our photo wore a thin film of ice on my phone screen, the filter tuning our smiles to carefully disguised happiness. The likes lined up as neatly as pills in an organizer, every “You look so well” stamped with an expiration date: midnight tonight.

When the delivery notification pierced the silence, the hair tie around my wrist had tightened itself into a pale red period. The mark it left when I loosened it looked like the “How have you been?” I had swallowed.

I turned off my phone.

The room went quiet like a light cue missed before a performance. I raised my glass toward the darkened living room.

“It’s okay. The gathering’s canceled. Tonight’s ritual invited only me.”

My voice fell to the floor without stirring a speck of dust, like a silent invitation I had finally signed for myself.

Ten Years at the Bottom of the Gift Pile

A year earlier, on this same day, I slipped the last postcard into its envelope. My fingernail left a fine split along the flap, like a premonition I had accidentally let show.

Ten postcards, holding ten years of mornings and evenings: two in the morning, when you stayed with me waiting for a call from someone who was never on time; the cartoon-print tissue you handed me when I was falling apart; the sound of footsteps along the school track, soaked through with sunlight—I wrote all of it in, stroke by stroke.

You never minded the fragility that always seemed to arrive at the wrong time. You would just look at me gently and say:

“It’s okay. Cry as long as you need.”

I drew a few hearts in red ink at the corners of the cards, pressing hard on every stroke. Pale lavender was your favorite color, so I chose pearlescent wrapping paper that caught the light with the same faint gleam as your eyes. The ribbon came loose and was tied again. Only on the third try did it become the perfect bow.

Before I handed you the gift, I kept repeating the opening line to myself:

“Us ten years ago. Us ten years later.”

In my head, I could already see you doing what you used to do—looking up halfway through, your eyes bright with soft tears.

But that day, you were wearing a new dress, your smile radiant as a dream that belonged to someone else. The room was thick with a strong perfume I didn’t recognize. I handed you the gift carefully, my fingers unsteady on the ribbon.

“Thank you.”

You said it and tucked the gift behind the pile of unopened presents, almost in the same motion. The gesture was as light as brushing away a speck of dust that didn’t matter. Then you smiled and turned toward the glittering box someone else was holding out to you.

When the birthday song began, I stood there holding an unclaimed version of our past. Then I heard the thin cord inside me—the one still tied to you—snap.

One corner of the wrapping paper was still visible. On it were the words:

“Remember that year you stayed up with me waiting for that call?”

It looked like a promise no one had redeemed, forgotten in time’s lost-and-found, the key long since missing.

The Apology the Perfume Kept

The bathroom tiles in her apartment were cool as the deck of a ferry. A sticky note on the glass said Smile, and suddenly my own reflection looked unfamiliar, as though even the moonlight had only been borrowed for the night.

My fingernails left two pale scratches along the edge of the sink. The pill bottle in my canvas bag rolled with a dull rattle, reminding me that I had almost used up my emotional allowance for the day.

I bent over the sink. The instant cold water struck my face, droplets clung to my lashes on the verge of falling—like the sentence caught in my throat:

“I was wrong. Could you hug me one more time, the way you did when you stayed up with me that night waiting for his message?”

But I said nothing.

When I twisted open the perfume bottle, my wrist went faintly unsteady. Half a drop of citrus and cedar steeped the unspoken plea into a secret.

Through the laughter coming from the living room, I saw her fingers alight like butterflies on another glittering box. The ten years I had written by hand lay curled in the corner like a purple bruise.

“Is the cake sweet?”

When she turned to ask me, rails screeched somewhere inside my chest, as though a memory were being forced onto another track.

I never mentioned the postcards again. I never mentioned “I was wrong,” either. I only wound a red thread around my wrist three times and left it unknotted, the wish ritual she had once taught me.

The sentence steeped in perfume still lay on the tip of my tongue, waiting for a recipient who would not absently crumple what had been placed in their hands.

The Candle Applauded Anyway

By the third ring of the doorbell, I was folding the little ears of the takeout bag. The plastic rustled like a song that had stopped before it was finished.

This time, I didn’t run.

I let the last echo gather frost slowly in the entryway.

An ordinary takeout box sat primly at the center of the table. In the halo caught by the silver fork, there was no wedding promise of forever—only a quiet vow made to the night.

The candle flame suddenly sneezed. My glass paused halfway to my lips. In its curved surface, I found the face of a stranger who was still learning how to smile.

“What am I toasting?”

The bubbles in my sparkling wine rushed to answer all at once:

“To the nose that managed not to cry today.”

“To the ‘I was wrong’ that stayed lodged in my throat.”

“To finally learning how to turn takeout into an imperial banquet.”

Water poured into the empty vase with a hollow rush, like setting out a glass of boiled water left to cool in advance for the person I would be tomorrow. When the 9:07 sunlight pushed open the door, there would be a rose waiting to say good morning.

In my memory, Bianbian rolled over, belly up, tail sweeping through imaginary confetti:

“Today’s level cleared! Your reward: five stolen minutes of sweet dreams before tomorrow morning’s alarm.”

Outside the window, moonlight lay like water, the silent witness to this ceremony for one.
