He paused in the doorway. The sound of his heel striking the floor stopped for half a second, as though he could smell the panic still lingering in the air.
“Why haven’t you turned on the light?”
He sat down beside me. His palm settled over my back, carrying the warmth of the coffee cup.
I shook my head and said nothing.

“I’ve been here all along. Nothing’s happened.”
As he said it, his arm tightened gently and drew me into his embrace.
He didn’t ask again. I didn’t explain.

The warmth of the coffee gradually faded in his arms.
