A Bipolar Girl Misread Her Warmth as a Soul Contract.

To her, it was part of everyday life. To me, it became the center of everything.

At two in the morning, my phone vibrated like a skipped heartbeat. Her profile picture lit up with a message:

“Can’t sleep. Saw your post.”

Sleep left me instantly. I felt like a night wanderer chosen by the moon, liquid fireworks rushing through my veins.

Through the speaker came the aftershock of an argument with her partner. Her voice was wrapped in a silver-foil kind of exhaustion, while I tasted the honey of trust melting into our friendship.

I sat cross-legged on the bay window ledge in the moonlight, taking apart every syllable like a child breaking something into stardust.

“I love talking to you” became “You understand me better than anyone.”

“You’re so thoughtful” opened inside my chest like a sunflower that would never wilt.

My mind turned into a frantic loom. One sentence could spin itself into ten different patterns.

She talked me through the maze of her relationship, and my replies came pouring out like a waterfall, as though I could build her a sheltering castle out of letters.

By the time the neon outside had gone dark and dawn had gilded the curtains, my pupils were still burning with the sun of noon.

I gave her a nickname reserved for best friends, pinned our chat like a private lighthouse, and stored every pearl-small detail in my notes.

Inside the funhouse mirror of an elevated mood, a single like became a secret vow. A late-night voice call became a soul eloping across a boundary no one had actually named.

I thought I had become her best friend.

I didn’t know she was only passing through the carnival of my mood.

Her Warmth, My Private Meaning

At 10:33, time kept sanding against my heart.

She still hadn’t come.

Restless, I wandered through the feed until one screenshot struck straight into the softest part of my trust.

A two-hour voice call.

Just not with me.

The caption underneath read:

“My best friend always shows up when I need them most.”

The words became a label of shame pressed against my chest.

My fingers moved almost without me. I opened her profile and kept scrolling. More screenshots of late-night calls came pouring down like a waterfall.

“Thank you for comforting me.”

“You really understand me.”

The sentences that had once opened inside my chest were suddenly mass-produced roses from a garden much larger than I had imagined.

Panic burst through me like fireworks.

I started firing messages into her chat as distress signals, each one a begging letter from a wanderer trying to write home.

I used ten sentences to hold up a single second of silence, asking only one thing beneath all of them:

Do you still think I’m the most special?

I had thought enthusiasm was the answer.

I didn’t know it had become an alarm.

Her replies began to fade—from the richness of oil paint, to the transparency of watercolor, until there was almost nothing left but the pencil sketch of “mm” and “haha.”

And still I burned brighter, like a candle caught in its own flame, swinging its light wildly from one subject to the next, desperate to prove I deserved to remain in the warmest corner of her heart.

The crystal crown of mania began to crack.

Sometimes I would fall from the clouds straight into the deep sea of depression.

But I still refused to expose the solo charade for what it was.

I’m good. I’m precious. How could she possibly dislike me?

It has to be that I just haven’t been bright enough yet.

So I kept sitting on the bay window ledge, waiting for the next chance to prove myself.

The Wound of Shame Woke Up

She finally replied at three in the morning.

It wasn’t the warmth of an instant reply, or the soft murmur of one of our late-night calls.

It was a verdict that cut across my face like winter wind:

“Could you stop messaging me all the time?”

For a second, I went completely still, as though I had stepped on the glass dream I had woven out of moonlight and shattered it beneath my own feet.

The pieces flew everywhere, cutting even the silence around my breathing.

Our chat history turned into a broken magic mirror, reflecting back an absurd archaeological dig:

five burning sentences from me for one detached punctuation mark from her;

ten lines of scalding confession, answered only by the pebble of an “mm” sinking out of sight;

twenty surges of feeling sent toward her, returned as scraps from a reaction meme, doled out like alms.

And I was still writing poems for a smiley face.

I hadn’t known that all those moments of “we just get each other” were a shadow play I had written and directed alone.

Shame poured over me like boiling asphalt, scorching my skin, sealing my breath, hardening around every piece of self-respect I had left.

So this was what I was to her.

Not someone with a special name.

Just a scarecrow in her social garden, foolishly convinced it had been cherished.

During mania, I had been a firefly consuming itself in light, mistaking brightness for a sign that friendship was moving closer.

Now I felt like an actor who had lost her lines, stranded at the center of her theater, gone cold.

My emotions became a pendulum gone wild, swinging between the blaze of anger and the ice cave of heartbreak.

She had never deceived me.

I was the one who had translated her courtesy into a glowing code meant only for me.

I let the screen go dark.

Then I lit it again, cutting through the room’s darkness, wanting only to tell her:

“I really did think of you as my best friend.”

My fingertip hovered above the pale message box.

But not even a period, no heavier than a sigh, could fall.

A Heartbeat Pretending to Sleep Between Two Poles

Every now and then, she still sent a paper airplane of a message my way.

“I think I dreamed about you today.”

“Just watched a movie you might like.”

Her tone was light as a feather, like a summer afternoon without a breath of wind.

I knew it wasn’t her fault.

My nerves were simply too fine, too quick to sink into meaning, turning every punctuation mark into the code for a secret invitation.

She posted photos from dinners with new friends, smiling as brightly as a sunflower in early summer.

I liked the post.

Took it back.

Then liked it again.

Sometimes I wondered: if time were film I could rewind, would I learn to rein in those meteor showers that had burned too fiercely?

But then another thought would come:

Was the me who burned like summer cicada song really wrong?

Maybe my bipolar soul was simply easier to ignite—and easier, in the cold that followed, to break apart into stardust.

Late at night, emotion still came over the shore of my heart like a black tide. I still opened the old drafts of love letters I had written into the void.

But I no longer ran toward her.

I no longer tried to pull her down with me into the whirlpool of what I was feeling.

So I wrote down the sentences I was too afraid to send.

Maybe, on some clearer day, I could let them ferment into a poem that tasted a little less bitter.

Between the lines lay hidden the heartbeats that had once beaten so hot and so honestly between two poles.

🌙 What if I thought we were best friends, but she didn’t?

Sometimes a friendship can feel mutual while two people are giving the same closeness very different meanings. During an elevated mood, attention, late-night conversations, or affectionate words can feel more exclusive and certain than they are.

The pain begins when one person has already made the friendship central while the other still experiences it as ordinary closeness.

I made her my best friend before I knew I wasn’t hers.

Have you ever found out that someone you called your best friend had given the relationship a different name?

What you felt was real, even if the relationship did not carry the same weight on both sides.

You don’t have to call that closeness a lie here.

You can leave it here quietly.

I read every comment.
