Dusk ironed the river into a matte mirror.
He stopped without warning. When he turned toward me, even the wind held its breath.
“You know something?”
“The way you are right now—you’re exactly my idea of the perfect partner.”
The compliment fell between us. The river reflected a flawless version of me before my eyes could.
I turned my face away from the light.
If my emotions break their banks again tomorrow, will this version of perfect still hold?
I knew exactly why the person standing there had passed.
The corners of my mouth stayed at the right upward mark. Every strand of hair remained within the category of “gentle.”
But who, exactly, was this standard of “perfect” measuring?
The body breathing evenly beside him in the dusk, or the ECG trace pressed into steadiness by forces outside itself?
He did not notice the moment I disappeared from the conversation. He was still sketching blueprints for the weekend.
I nodded along, while somewhere deeper inside me, I pressed pause.
Below the stage, another “me” had not yet loaded. She stood in the dark, silently watching the trailer titled Perfect.
The evening wind moved past us. One by one, the lights along the riverbank woke up.
I walked along the edge of the crack without falling.
I simply could no longer tell whose tomorrow the path beneath my feet—labeled “happiness”—was leading toward.
With bipolar disorder, stability has never been an address I can count on living at for long.
The Invitation to Move In Felt Like an Arrest Warrant
At the dinner table, I was unassailable.
He said:
“You’re always so gentle and considerate.”
He had no idea the sentence made me want to cry.
Whenever I felt that familiar darkness closing in on my chest, I would issue notice three days in advance:
“I have to work late these next few days, so I can’t see you this weekend.”
The message was careful and considerate. Nothing in it gave me away.
But the me I kept hidden was curled deep beneath the covers, waiting for this bout of sadness—for no reason at all—to recede like the tide.
Until he set down his knife and fork and the light shifted in his eyes:
“I want to wake up and see you every day. Let’s move in together.”
The clink of my knife and fork against the plate suddenly turned piercing.
I wasn’t afraid of moving in. I wasn’t afraid of the intimacy of sharing day and night with him.
I was afraid he would discover that inside this body called the “perfect girlfriend” lived a soul that needed outside forces just to keep from collapsing.
“Okay.”
I heard my own voice say it, light as a lie.
The show went on.
Only my soul had already risen from its seat and stood beyond the restaurant’s bright light, watching her tuck the broken pieces into her napkin and serve what was left of her intactness at the table.
“I Love You” Had No Recipient
12:37 a.m.
The essay had stalled on line twelve. The cursor blinked with the rhythm of a command.
In the top-right corner of my screen, a message from him surfaced:
“I love you.”
Light as a word murmured in sleep, yet too sincere for the wakefulness this hour was supposed to have.
I wanted to say it back, but I could not type those three words.
Because suddenly, I realized there were too many versions of me in the room.
If he opened the door right now, he would see one of them sitting upright, her thoughts clear and orderly.
But he would not know that the three-a.m. version might be standing barefoot on the floor, arguing with her shadow—or might have fallen so deeply into silence that even the sound of her own breathing felt too loud.
These ghosts had no names. Yet they took turns appearing whenever I loosened my guard.
The words “I love you” hovered in the chat box, unable to find a recipient.
A tear fell suddenly onto the back of my hand.
Not because I was moved.
But because right at the center of that sentence of love, I watched its light fall evenly across the room—and fail to illuminate a single shadow with a definite outline.
For the first time, I understood that being loved with bipolar disorder was not a question of “Does someone love me?”
It was this:
Is there any version of me that is allowed to exist for long?
Outside the window, the city began switching its lighting system, preparing dawn for the people who would wake early.
I could still type. I could still send back a hugging emoji. I could still let the conversation keep flowing like any normal relationship.
And yet a sharp loneliness opened inside me.
The deepest loneliness, I realized, was not being unloved.
It was having love finally arrive and discovering that you had already splintered into so many versions that not one complete “me” could receive, without apology, the whole of what had been given.
I Was Loneliest While Stable
Three minutes into the movie, his shoulder leaned naturally against mine, carrying a warmth so familiar it hurt.
“What if we watch this movie every year on this day?”
I nodded.
The corners of my mouth lifted fifteen degrees—the calculated ideal curve of “gentle delight.”
This was what I was always like when I was stable: smiling first, explaining first, stepping back before he could grow tired.
Once, I let a test slip through the narrow space between my lips.
“What if... I’m not always this easy?”
His voice held a soft certainty.
“You will be. You’ve always been so good.”
And so our future always stopped in the foyer.
I could sketch possibilities, but I never dared draw the outline of a promise.
Not because I did not long for one. Because I could not guarantee that the version he cherished would arrive on time at every dawn that needed to be loved.
Just as he turned toward me, his gaze soft enough to hold water, the blade that had long lain in ambush rose to my lips:
You love this stable version of me.
But with bipolar, the stable phase is only a temporary guest.
Yet I don’t even dare introduce you to her.
The words sank back into the dark.
My body was still in his arms, maintaining the perfect fifteen-degree smile.
But my heart had already risen and left, quietly closing behind it the door called “us.”
Drink the Water First
The first water of the morning fell to the bottom of the glass. Mist gathered on the glass, while lines from last night’s movie still clung to my eardrums.
I pulled open the curtains. The sky was an unwoken gray-blue.
The familiar question surfaced again:
What if the tide surges right now?
I quietly pressed it back below the surface.
Not today. I will not rehearse that tsunami yet.
As the water slid down my throat, the world suddenly came back into focus.
A shaft of light struck the center of the kitchen, illuminating the me who was being loved right now.
At the edge of the glow, the shadow made room without resistance. Another me sat down quietly beside her.
Two shadows rested side by side in the morning light. For the first time, neither tried to evict the other. Neither tried to take her place.
The glass made a small, brittle sound when I set it back on the counter.
I did not prepare an emergency plan for a possible emotional slide.
Outside the window, light climbed inch by inch across the kitchen counter until it arrived at my fingertips. The warmth was so ordinary, and so certain.
Slowly, I understood that what frightened me had never been the rise and fall of my emotions.
It was this: being loved only happened when I was “behaving well.”
